Dysphagia (Swallowing Disorder)
At our clinic, we provide comprehensive services to assess and treat swallowing impairments in both pediatric and adult populations. Our team comprises highly experienced and skilled speech-language pathologists, some of whom collaborate with private hospitals, take on supervisory roles at elderly homes, and include PhD candidates specializing in swallowing disorders.
Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, can occur at any age and disrupts one’s ability to safely and efficiently eat and drink. Swallowing problems increase the risk of choking, malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration (food/liquid entering the airway).
The dysphagia evaluation process begins with a thorough clinical examination to observe the oral mechanism, trial different food and liquid consistencies, and screen for any signs of aspiration risk. We also review the patient’s medical history, feeding abilities, nutrition/hydration status, and quality of life factors. If further objective testing is warranted, we collaborate with ENT physicians on instrumental assessments like the modified barium swallow study (MBSS) or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). These tests allow direct visualization of the swallowing mechanism to pinpoint specific deficits.
Once the swallowing disorder is diagnosed, our clinicians develop an individualized treatment plan utilizing evidence-based therapy techniques. Treatment may incorporate exercises to improve muscle strength/coordination, compensatory strategies, diet texture modification, positioning/posturing, and more.
Early detection and proper treatment of dysphagia is crucial to allow safe oral intake, prevent respiratory complications like pneumonia, and improve overall health outcomes. Our clinic is dedicated to helping both children and adults regain their swallowing abilities to the fullest potential.
